About Us
Cunningham Door & Window (formerly Cunningham Overhead Door) was founded in the early 1940's. We began conducting business under the name, Crawford Door Sales. At the time, Crawford was our sole supplier. Crawford manufactured quality wooden overhead doors that were recognized as being the best in the industry. A few of the many distinctions were; larger dimensional wood rails and styles, clear non-finger joined wood, plywood panels in lieu of pressed hardboard panels and heavy gauge steel hinges. Building contractors would proudly proclaim that they only purchased Crawford doors for the homes and buildings which they built.
Crawford was the first manufacturer to use the torsion spring counter balancing system. This is the same method which is used today on both residential and industrial doors. Early print advertising incorporated a Magician, complete with top hat, cape and cane. This was because raising a garage door overhead was a novel concept. The "Marvel Lift" series was very popular. Many of these doors are still in use today, after 70 - 80 years of service.
In 1967, our father, Charles L. Cunningham, Sr., purchased the business from our grandfather. At the time, Charles was 33 years old and the father of six young children ranging in age from 2 - 11. Our parent's bank account had zero excess funds. They barely had two nickels to rub together and certainly did not have the capital to buy our grandfather's interest in the company. Charles financed the purchase of the company through outside lending institutions. Charles wanted to, "Stand on my own two feet". He impressed the managers at the lending institutions into taking a chance on him. He then worked his tail off to make the company succeed.
The business was still very small, there were only six full time employees operating from three trucks. Like many a small business owner, he had an infinite list of job duties. During the day he would; unload and load trucks, install, repair and sell doors. After helping bathe and putting the kids to bed, he would make out the payroll and generate invoices. At his retirement, in the year 2000, the company had 43 full time employees.
We changed our company name in the 1970'S to Cunningham Overhead Door because we were representing and distributing products from several different manufacturers. Today, after further evolution of our business to include windows, we now are known as Cunningham Door & Window.
Our primary business is still the sales, installation and repair of overhead type doors and electric operators. In addition, we also distribute the following residential and commercial products:
Residential: Sectional overhead doors, electric door operators, aluminum storm doors, steel and fiberglass entry doors, steel and fiberglass patio doors, fiberglass improvement windows, wood with aluminium clad windows, vinyl windows, drop shades, electric gate operators, gate operator access controls and telephone entry systems.
Commercial/industrial: sectional doors, coiling doors, sliding industrial doors, fire doors, high speed doors, clear strip doors, coiling grilles, sliding grilles, scissors gates, vertical rising gates, insect barriers, electric door operators, electric gate operators, access controls, telephone entry systems, dock levelers, dock plates, dock boards, dock lights, dock bumpers, dock seals, dock shelters and vehicle restraints.
We were the first to coin the phrase, "we sell the best and service the rest". Unfortunately, we did not legally protect our slogan. Because so many companies have been using our original slogan, we decided to differentiate ourselves by promoting our current slogan, "three generations of quality".
We are very proud of our position as the area's oldest and largest overhead door company. In 2000, we completed the construction of our expanded facilities. We still practice the same traditions our grandfather and father did - delivering quality products at a fair price and fulfilling our promises. We currently have 55 full time employees and operate a fleet of over forty vehicles.
